John Piper provides a thoughtful and firm response to the cloudy, contradictory, and killing view that most of our culture, including our President, holds . . . for now that is.

Thu, 04 Jun 2009 03:49:50 -0700 Free Music at Re:Sound http://blog.4handsclapping.com/free-music-at-resound http://blog.4handsclapping.com/free-music-at-resound The Resurgence is launching a new music branch named Re:Sound. Part of me doesn't understand why, because all of Mars Hills excellent music is already available for free on their site. But hey, maybe in the future they'll help get some music from some other local churches on folks radar. I'd love that. Re:Sound will be launching on June 11th and until then they are giving away a free sampler with tracks from Joe Days Northern Conspiracy, Joel Browns Red Letter and Tim Smiths Ex Nihilo - All Mars Hill bands. They've also included all the chord sheets for the songs which I am guessing is great if you know how to read music and play an instrument. Here's a few of my favorite tracks: Red Letter - forthcoming release - Author and Perfector [audio:ReSound/05 Author and Perfecter (from forthcoming Red Letter release).mp3] Northern Conspiracy - forthcoming release - What Have We Done [audio:ReSound/08 What Have We Done (from forthcoming The Northern Conspiracy release).mp3] Ex Nihilo - Rain City Hymnal - I Sing the Mighty Power [audio:ReSound/02 I Sing the Mighty Power (from Rain City Hymnal).mp3]

Fri, 01 May 2009 05:40:33 -0700 The Masculinity of the Greatest Generation http://blog.4handsclapping.com/the-masculinity-of-the-greatest-generation http://blog.4handsclapping.com/the-masculinity-of-the-greatest-generation I know I have not been writing about my personal life lately. I've been posting links to content and such. I've been too busy to write, but I have been wrestling and growing. When I started the series on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood I said
But that’s not really what interests me the most. You see, both of these views on gender within the church do not simply address the questions of “how do a husband and wife relate?” and “can women be pastors?” Both views offer answers to much, much deeper questions that are relevant to any man or woman whether or not they are married or desiring to be a pastor. Piper has asked before, “What do you tell your little boy when he asks you, ‘Daddy, what does it mean to grow up and be a man and not a woman?’ or ‘Mommy, what does it mean to grow up and be a woman and not a man?’” Piper has said that if all you can respond with is an anatomical answer, then you are setting your children up for disaster.
Mark and I have taken a bit of a break from reviewing the book and, yes, we need to get back on track, but let me give you an update of where I am at. I am still uncomfortable with drawing lines in stone of what manhood and womanhood is without strong Biblical warrant. I still am not sure how exactly God describes manhood in Scripture or even if he does with the precision that I want, but I am more convinced then ever that it, manhood, masculinity is real. I can't quite put my finger on what it is, but while reading the article bellow I was fighting back tears. There is a depth of character and honor that the article describes that I long for and by Gods grace I believe I will understand more and posses more. While the article is not purposefully christocentric by any means (oh and I wish it was!), I could not help but feeling the weight of His glory hidden behind it.

Foxes Book of Martyrs
Beginning with the story of Stephen from the book of Acts, considered the first Christian martyr, the drama builds to the passion of the early Church's persecution under the Roman Empire. The hardy and radical faith of those first believers spawned medieval missionary movements that spread the gospel across Europe and into England, Scotland, and Ireland.

All of them are wonderfully winsome talks which show that the power of these objections weakens the closer you look at them, the more you wrestle with them. Bellow I've embedded one of the talks which is on Hell. After hearing these talks, I'm going to buy this book. You can check out all of the talks for free. David Clarkson (1621-1686)

"You can be sure that no immoral, impure, or covetous person will inherit the Kingdom of Christ and of God. For a such a person is really an idolater who worships the things of this world." Ephesians 5:5

A covetous man is an idolater. Not only the covetous, but the immoral, are idolaters. For the apostle, who here makes covetousness to be idolatry, considers voluptuous people to be idolaters also, where he speaks of some who make their belly their God (Phil. 3:19). Indeed, every reigning lust is an idol—and every person in whom it reigns is an idolater. "The lust of the flesh, the lust of the eye, and the pride of life." Pleasures, and riches, and honors are the carnal man's trinity. These are the three great idols of worldly men, to which they prostrate their souls! And giving that to them which is due only to God, they hereby become guilty of idolatry. That this may be more evident—that covetousness, immorality, and other lusts are idolatry—let us consider what it is and the several kinds of it.

Wed, 22 Apr 2009 13:06:30 -0700 How I Came to be Both Reformed and Charismatic http://blog.4handsclapping.com/how-i-came-to-be-both-reformed-and-charismati http://blog.4handsclapping.com/how-i-came-to-be-both-reformed-and-charismati A question was asked on the Gospel Coalition Network to those Christians who are both Reformed and Charismatic:
If you were like me, you were a Calvinist who never imagined simultaneously embracing the charismatic/continuationist position. Or perhaps you were a charismatic, Pentecostal-type who never imagined embracing simultaneously the doctrines of grace. Would anyone care to share their experiences with coming to the Reformed Charismatic position?
I don't exactly fit either of those two categories (reformed first and then also charismatic vs charismatic first and then also reformed.) I was first charismatic, then not charismatic, then reformed and finally later also charismatic again! I shared my story in brief on the site:
I was raised Lutheran though I never came to a saving knowledge of Christ as a child. I was 19 years old when I visited a word of faith church. During the beginning of the service, we were singing some song about Jesus shedding his blood for our sins and, well, I rather abruptly believed! My girlfriend and I married shortly there after and continued to attend that church.

Many people neglect reading a lot, because they say they have trouble reading large and lengthy books. This isn't the case though. It is through either ignorance or laziness that they neglect reading good things. I say this because so much of what is worth reading is actually quite short and really not that hard to find. Reading is a precious gift that we neglect too often without just cause and so miss out on it's fruit.

Thu, 09 Apr 2009 02:34:06 -0700 What Good is Good? http://blog.4handsclapping.com/what-good-is-good http://blog.4handsclapping.com/what-good-is-good I said I was going to start this blog to record my thoughts. I wanted to do that because I need to remember them and, God willing, I thought they might be useful to others. Lately, though, I haven't been capturing them, so here goes. This is something I have meditated on numerous times, but have never written down:
God is good.
No really, He is good. I am not sure if there was a time in the history of English when "good" was not a trivial word; what I do know though, is that the word "good" is not trivial at all. The gospels record a man coming to Christ greeting him with "Good teacher!" Jesus responded, rather cryptically, "Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone." Now, to those who think this to be an acknowledgment by the Christ that he is not God, read the eighth chapter of John. Back to the point: only God is good. Really? Only God is good? I thought lots of things were good though?? No! Only God is good.

Artists Reconstruction of Adam and Eve Over the weekend I read chapter 3 of Recovering Biblical Manhood and Womanhood, Male-Female Equality and Male Headship: Genesis 1-3 by Raymond C. Ortlund Jr. In this short essay Raymond sets out to prove that both male-female equality and male headship were instituted by God at creation according to Genesis 1-3. Along the way he also critiques egalitarian interpetations of these Scriptures and attempts to combat male domination in contrast to male headship.

If you haven't been to the site and looked around then you don't know what you are missing! I also just signed up as a Monergism Books affiliate this week. Basically it means that if you buy a book from their bookstore they give me a cut which I can in turn use to buy books! You pay the same price either way, so hey why not! They only know to credit me though if you use my link, which I added to the right side bar. Greek & Hebrew Reader's Bible John Dyer, who I am not familiar with, created this online Greek and Hebrew Bible . . . for free! It reminds of Zhubert.com, but it also has Hebrew and not just Greek like Zhubert. If you mouse over words you can get a quick dictionary definition of the word and also case information. This site looks perfect for someone getting started in Greek! Believin' Stephen Now I just recently heard Believin' Stephen for the first time. This is Timothy Brindles little brother. If you aren't familiar with Tim, you should be. Believin' Stephen just recently released 19 tracks titled The Perseverance MixTape which you can down for FREE right here. The songs don't seem to conform to an overarching theme that well, but overall I am liking it and looking forward to what else comes out of Believin' Stephen. BestCommentaries.com I noticed this site floating around in the blogosphere before, but never got around to checking it out until today. The site looks fantastic - content wise that is, the design is another story. ;) The Unashamed Workmen has a short review of the site.

The second chapter of RBMW is in a question and answer format covering the most common objections of the complementarian position. The danger of a Q&A section such as this one is that the answerer is also playing the role of questioner, which can of course lead to the most diffcult questions being made, shall we say, easier, or for that matter left out completely. I am happy to report that in my opinion the authors of this section, John Piper and Wayne Grudem, pose all of the toughest questions, sharp edges intact, and provide serious, though concise, responses to them.

I have already dropped emails to JD Senkbile who is spear heading Acts 29's efforts in South Africa and Rob Smith of the Agathos Foundation both of which I have talked to about this idea, but with a much more future date.  I'm excited to hear from them to find out where the need is greatest and where we could fit best. There are a ton of details to figure out (Like the fact that we own a house!) inn such a short period of time but it looks like God has opened this door and we don't doubt he'll sort it all out! -The Forehand Clan Update I set up a blog just to document this chapter of our lives.

Mon, 30 Mar 2009 09:49:25 -0700 Posts are Resuming http://blog.4handsclapping.com/posts-are-resuming http://blog.4handsclapping.com/posts-are-resuming Post are back in flow starting this week. Mark will be posting his review of chapter 2 of RBMW today and mine will be out on Wednesday. I also have some other ideas that have been cooking in my head that I need to get down, so hopefully I'll find time for that this week as well! Christian Audio dot Com In the mean time, if you haven't heard me mention ChristianAudio.com in the past then let me just point you to them for the first time. They're a great source for Christian audio books. They have a lot of the classics on their site, but also a huge collection of current stuff. Everything is excellently narrated and prices are good. They also give a way a free title every month. This months is Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life. On the first of each month a new title comes out. Now for the Important Part! ChristianAudio created a FaceBook group and promised a $150 gift certificate to whoever invited the most folks to join! As of a few days ago I was in second place, but who knows now. Today and tomorrow are the last days of the contest and so I figured I'd make one more push to win! :D To help me when first join the group and then go post "Dwayne Forehand" in this thread. Thanks for the Prayers Also thanks to all of my friends who have been praying for my family. We really appreciate it and still need it!
